fashion week: how to...

Hey everyone!! Today is the first day of Fashion Week on A Little of This and That and this week of fashion posts and advice starts with a good ol' "How To".

A friend of mine posed a question for me on Facebook, "How do you wear navy pants?" Basically, she's treating navy like it is a color and not a neutral. But navy is a neutral. It can be worn with other neutrals just fine but it can also be worn with COLOR...which is my favorite. HA. Here are some examples:

Navy pants can be paired with a neutral tank and a colorful cardigan. Of course, I love the idea of a funky shoe as well, but even if you don't, you can try a neutral shoe like in the outfit on the right. Navy is really cute with yellow (any shade from buttercup to mustard) and green (hunter to lime). Almost any shade of yellow and green works with navy blue. Why? What colors are the closest to blue on the color wheel? Yellow and green.

Navy can really go with almost any color. I love it with a beautiful blushy coral blouse or with turquoise/aqua. Don't feel like you need to stay in the blues and greens for a color that "goes" with navy blue...it can also work with red.

You don't have to save this color combo for the 4th of July because it doesn't ALWAYS come across as patriotic, you know? Pair your red with a neutral cardi or bag/shoes and you can safely avoid compelling people to recite the Pledge of Allegiance when they see you. Word of caution. I carefully chose a pale camel colored blazer and a light tan bag for these outfits because if you had chosen a white blazer/bag you might run the risk of looking like a Ralph Lauren Independence Day ad.

Hopefully, I've given you some ideas for how you can wear navy pants. Do you have any other fashion questions you'd like me to blog about? Shoot me an email and we'll talk about it. aprilanne147 [at] hotmail [dot] com.

Tune in tomorrow for another FASHION WEEK post on ALOTAT!

  2. I LOVE navy, and I think it looks fabulous with both red and coral!

  3. Tanesha did navy pants today too :) http://girlwithcurves.tumblr.com/

My favorite of yours is the last one (I love that the bag is partly black and there is black in the leopard print and yet it works perfectly with the navy pants). I would be more likely to wear something like the first two as they fit in better with my mommy-on-the-go lifestyle.

I think of navy as being just like dark wash denim - definitely a neutral.

    1. Oh, absolutely Selah! I agree with you about thinking of navy as a dark washed denim. And sometimes, my dark washed denim is treated like a navy...especially when I'm wearing black.... See my reply to Jill's comment. :)

  4. Hmm, I really like that coral and teal with navy. I'm still not quite buying the red/navy combo. BTW, if a person were to only own neutral colored shoes (ie, only black or brown) what color goes better with navy? I think brown, because I think black just looks like you tried to match and missed.

    1. Okay, okay, so you like coral and navy but not red? Coral is a shade of red...but never mind. HAHA. Um, for your shoe quesh: personally, I'd go with brown unless it was an issue of dressiness. I assume both sets of shoes are equally dressy? Meaning, you don't have a pair of brown desert boots and then black dress pumps. If they are equal, I would choose brown, simply because I still have a hard time doing navy and black or even wearing black with darker denim. Something about that just doesn't sit right with me. IDK. I think our next shopping/thrifting/acquiring project will be colored shoes for you, lady. It will change your world. :)

    2. I do think colored shoes would revolutionize my world.

    3. I LOVE mixing black and navy (or dark wash denim). It just has to be very deliberate. You can't really wear an all navy outfit with black flats. That looks like a mistake. I like to wear both neutrals in approximately equal parts. For instance, a navy top, dark wash jeans tucked into black boots, and a black cardi.

I would wear brown shoes with navy pants if I was wearing a warm colored top (brown, red, coral, yellow) like in the picture with the yellow cardi. I would wear black shoes (and black accessories to equalize the black and navy) with a cool color top (blue, green, purple).

  5. So even after all of this help, I basically failed getting dressed today in my navy pants. I ended up being 10 minutes late to work because I could not figure out what to wear. I was going to wear this cropped seafoamish green cardi with a white tank underneath. But it looked weird with the tank I had. So then I tried a yellow cardi with a white knit shirt. Again, it looked weird. It wasn't exactly the color combos that were the problems but the cardis and the underneath shirts I had. I ended up in a pink cardi, which i realize now, was not even one of the options! And I specifically did not want to wear a valentine's color today, and that's what I did. I'm a fashion mess.

    1. Jill, pink and navy are lovely together! "Navy can really go with almost any color." April wrote that in this post (it's right under the second picture). And in today's post she had an outfit with a pink top and darker wash jeans (which are very similar to navy slacks). You're not a fashion mess, you're doing great!

    2. I agree with Selah! Navy and pink are very pretty together. I get you on the tanks making the outfit though. I find that I need to get tanks with a bit of spandex in them, otherwise they stretch out and lose their shape and look strange underneath cardigans.

Why would you NOT want to wear Valentine's colors?!?!

    3. Oh, and I think we need photo documentation of your outfit today, Jill. I need to see the pants in question. Perhaps you subconsciously don't like the pants because of fit/cut/etc and so you don't know what to wear them with??

    4. Okay, I'll see if the roomz can snap a picture tonight. I think I really do love the pants. I blame the cropped cardis (seafoam and yellow). The pink one works fine, but I didn't have any good jewelry to go with it.

And re: Vday, I prefer to appear to be above it all. Even if I'm not.

    5. I uploaded a pic last night to your blog's fb page, but then I got people liking it and commenting on it so I deleted it. I didn't realize all of my friends would see it, I was just thinking those who are fans of your blog's FB would see it. I can text it to you if you want.

  6. I wonder how they would've seen it?? I think that only the fans of that page would have. Hmmm...yes please text though!
