day 1: the first thanksgiving

Today marks the beginning of a week-long blog series on A Little of This and That about being thankful…coinciding with Thanksgiving on Thursday.
So often we (or, I) associate Thanksgiving with food, food and um, food. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s really not what Thanksgiving is all about. I mean, the first Thanksgiving had food, yes, but it also had some smelly pilgrims and some half-naked Native Americans too. We don’t really celebrate those aspects of Thanksgiving do we? (Note: Some of you may have an old Uncle Al who unintentionally is half-naked after his shirt slides up over his belly while he’s napping after the meal. However, that is not what I’m referring to.)
I wasn’t there, but I would assume that the first Thanksgiving was about celebrating how far these pilgrims had come after they’d left their home country to make a life in a new and foreign land. They were thankful for being alive and safe in their new land. They were thankful for the new friends they’d made and how much they’d learned from befriending the Native Americans. They were thankful for the freedom they had in this new world to worship how they wanted to.
Interestingly enough, I am thankful for many of the things that the pilgrims were thankful for on the first Thanksgiving. I’m thankful for my family that loves me, I’m thankful for old friends and new friends, I’m  thankful for this new city that I call home and I’m thankful that I live in a country where I can worship freely without fear of persecution. Also, like the pilgrims, I am thankful for corn. (we can specifically thank Squanto for that!)
Now, here’s your charge. Be in a thankful state of mind, constantly dwelling on your blessings. Feel free to comment on these posts with your thankful lists. Take a button (below) to put on your blog or sidebar to celebrate “Be Thankful” with me.  And join me this week as we celebrate thankfulness in new ways.

As a little something for you, I’ve created 2 images for you. They can be used as a desktop wallpaper, a printable, or even as placemats for your Turkey Day meal. Enjoy and Be Thankful.

  1. I'm thankful for:
These desktop wallpapers you put up. They keep my computer looking fresh.
    Diet Pepsi/coke
    A car that works well
A job that gives me lots of time off
That I'm refinancing my house today and that it will be all mine in just 15 short years.
That I can switch between contacts and glasses
That it's been warmer than usual this fall.
That I'm going to get lots of hugs starting on Wednesday.
That I get to see my little sister, caring grandma and favorite cousin this week. Plus my brother, parents, aunts, uncles and most other cousins.
That I don't have kids of my own, but I get to borrow my nieces and nephews enough to get the kid fix.
    For the game of Mafia.

    I LOVE THANKFUL LISTS!
