the multi-seasonal maxi dress

Ah, the maxi dress. The summertime staple. The beachy coverup. The fall transitional. Wait, what?

Yep, you heard it. Maxi dresses are a great multi-seasonal piece that can help transition your wardrobe from summer to fall. There are two things that can really help transition a maxi dress; accessories and outerwear.

I'm going to show you how easy it is to take those summertime staples and transition them into fall. First, the dress. It's a floral print which seems to be suitable only for summer. Not true.

Here is how you might see this dress during the summer.

Now, here's the same dress stylized for the fall.
The same dress with different accessories and outerwear gives you completely different looks. The addition of a belted cardigan covers the shoulders (and wards off the early autumn chill). The gladiator sandals are replaced by some flat riding boots and the straw bag is replaced with something that's made of a fabric with a bit more weight to it. Of course we know that a proper lady changes up her fragrances in the spring and fall (wink!) so we replaced a summery floral fragrance (Daisy by MJ) with a more musky, winter scent (Beautiful by Estee Lauder).

So when you go to change over your closet for your cool weather clothing (or am I the only one who does that???) don't be to hasty to pack up all your maxi dresses. You just might discover a nice transitional piece that will help you get through the cool mornings and warm afternoons of autumn.

  1. You are so not the only one who does that- I have plastic totes that house summer and winter- because I live in New England, the seasons vary SO violently that you have to have a completely different wardrobe for each season haha...snowpants, parka, snowboots- bathing suit and flipflops!
p.s. about the maxi dresses- love both! so cute and definitely a transitional piece.
