how to: wear leggings

Leggings are quickly becoming my favorite fall accessory. They are perfectly wearable for work, comfortable and great for layering.

A few notes about leggings:
1) Generally, sold dark colors are best. Nothing against pink leopard print leggings at home, but out of the house and/or for work they are usually not ideal. I think that solid dark colored leggings are also the most versatile for dressing up or down. Colors like black, chocolate brown, navy blue (or denim leggings), charcoal gray or plum are some of my favorites.

2) Leggings look best when paired with boots, booties, or flats. I usually tend to stray away from the leggings-with-high-heels look because it usually comes across more 80s dance teacher or lady-of-the-night than chic.

3) Plus sized ladies CAN wear leggings. Lane Bryant, Topshop, Forever 21 and Target have some great plus-size leggings options. Just like anyone who wears leggings, you want to make sure that whatever you wear over them covers your bum and extends a few inches down your legs. A good rule of thumb with wearing leggings is that you want to hang your arms down by your side and place your hands on the sides of your thighs. Whatever you wear should fall somewhere between where your hand touches your leg. If it doesn't, it's too long or too short.

Here are a few outfit ideas that incorporate leggings:

I can't WAIT until the weather cools a bit more so I can bring out my leggings. :) It's a great way to extend the wearability of your summer stuff too because adding these leggings underneath keeps you warm when the temp drops.

  1. So the boot/shoe color should be different than the legging color, correct? Also, it is as I suspected, I have very few skirts/dresses that are the correct length. I bought the leggings hoping I could extend my summer skirt/dress wardrobe, but I don't wear short skirts/dresses. Another question: do you wear leggings with skirts or just dresses?

  2. I can't wait to wear my leggings either!

Jill, I think wearing leggings and boots in the same color actually works really well. It makes your legs look longer. Two of the outfits above have black leggings with black boots (striped dress in group 1, green tunic in group 2). Also, you can wear leggings with skirts or dresses but they do work best with minis. If you want to extend your longer summer skirt/dress wardrobe, I'd try opaque tights.

  3. I desperately want to wear leggings with boots and cute (longish) tops. I just never feel confident about doing it.

  4. I definitely think that I'll be adding some leggings and tunics to my Fall wardrobe! I love the way they look with boots and flats, but two of my faves to go with leggings are TOMS and Converse. :)

  5. Jill, buying legging-appropriate tops/dresses is definitely something I need to do more of as well. Because I don't wear shorter dresses, I don't have a lot of stuff that would work. HOWEVER, tunics and shorter-length dresses that would work with leggings are very popular now. Even longer belted cardigans work too.

Oh, and as for skirts, I would probably side with Selah and suggest opaque tights with skirts and do boots, flats or even heels.

  10. I'm going to wear leggings tomorrow. The high is supposed to be 61 degrees! I'm thinking navy tank, dark denim skirt, black leggings and cardi and my black Mary Jane style sneakers. Cute, comfy (I'm running errands with the kids) and slimming.
