top 5 tuesday: wedding songs

Now y'all don'tcha be gettin' any ideas just because I'm blogging about wedding stuff today. Capiesce?

Alright, now that we've got that out of the way...

Many of you know that I do some wedding singing on the side. I've sung almost every song under the moon and most of the time, I have to sing what I'm given...and it can be anything from Celine Dion to Ray LaMontagne. Very rarely does a bride ASK for my opinion when it comes to songs at their wedding, so because I have a blog, I decided that this will be where I share MY favorite wedding songs.

I should also probably forewarn you that the "wedding songs" that I like aren't normal weddings songs for the most part. Also, if I ever get married, you may or may not hear any/all/some of these songs.

1. Love Reign O'er Me. This is originally by The Who though I love the Pearl Jam version the absolute best. No offense to Roger and Pete...I just like Eddie's version better. It's more gravelly. Also, the clip of this song (click on the title) is probably my absolute favorite performance of it...ever.

2. Be Here Now. Ray LaMontagne. Oh man, this is such a beautiful song with beautiful words sung by a man with a beautiful voice.

3. Feels Like Home. Chantal Kreviazuk. Such beautiful words. I've actually had the privilege of singing this song at a wedding and I STILL like it. That's almost unheard of. It still gives me goosebumps.

4. By the Way They Dance. Jump Little Children. Gah, this has amazing words and a perfect tempo for an actual first dance...just an idea. :)

5. Hallelujah. Leonard Cohen, though I'm partial to Rufus Wainwright's version and this one done by a quartet of four world-renowned singers. (click the title) It's not a wedding song, but I've always thought an acoustic version like this would be so perfect for aisle walking. (either the bride or the bridal party/groomsmen)

Honorable Mention: You may or may not hear this song at my wedding.

If you're married, did you have a "song"? Or if not, is there a song/songs that you've always loved at weddings?

  1. My wedding included The Wedding Song (There is Love) by Paul Stookey sung by my sister, The Last Supper by Cindy Morgan sung during Communion by my best friend and her husband, I Could Sing of Your Love Forever by Delirious also sung by my best friend for our first dance and an original song written and performed by my father.

  2. Also, I walked down the aisle to Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring by J. S. Bach and recessed to Beethoven's Ode to Joy. We also had a ballet danced to The Lord's Prayer but I don't remember which version of the song we used because the choreographer chose it. I remember my pianist specifically asked me not to used I Will Be Here by Steven Curtis Chapman because it was so over-used at the time (2000). I wasn't really considering that song anyway.

  3. Um, wow, Selah. I've never heard of so many songs in one wedding! But, hey, whatever floats your boat. Also, a BALLET??? Did you have a Princess Di dress?

  4. I guess it was a lot of songs but I wanted my sister and best friend to sing and then my dad wrote me a song so, of course, I had to include that. The ballet was only one dancer so probably not as grand as you're thinking. I majored in dance in college so I wanted to include that in the wedding. My dress was an off the shoulder chiffon sheath. I'm not a fan of princess dresses.

  5. First useless tidbit of trivia for you...Chantal Kreviazuk is married to Raine Maida...lead singer of Our Lady Peace (the bass player for OLP is one that you had a crush on).

Our wedding song...Thank You (Led Zeppelin). I know...you're shocked. :-)

  6. Wow, I never knew that Kevin. That makes me love her even more!! Oh, and a LZ wedding song is AWESOME!

Selah, even if it wasn't a whole ballet, that's still pretty cool!
