who wears prints?

  Hello friends.

Today's post is all about prints. Generally, I'm not much of a print lover. I usually stick to solids, but I'm really trying to expand my wardrobe by adding more prints. Well, I should say that I've always loved stripes, but lately, polka dots, ikat and geometric prints are drawing my eye.

Some people are afraid to wear prints. I could even be considered a bit of a print-o-phobe. I put together a few outfits that feature prints. Take a look...

Here are a few more pretty prints I've seen lately...

What do you think about prints? Do you stick to one type like stripes or florals?

  1. I actually went and looked in my closet before commenting and I was surprised to find a lot more print than I expected! I have 3 floral blouses (bought for Easter 2010, 2011, and 2012 - apparently I only do floral in the Spring). I also have 6 striped tops and several items that are a solid color but have a textural print (like lace or crochet). All of my bottoms are solid except for 1 houndstooth skirt. I am very attracted to all the chevron stripes I've seen lately.

  2. I love that dress in the middle at the top, but I feel like I could never wear it. Don't prints make you look bigger? That's what I think.

I also think the skirt at the top on the right looks like something Zooey would wear.

    1. Jill, you should check out grownandcurvywoman.com
She wears lots of print and color and looks wonderful! Some of her dresses are very similar to the ones April posted but you get to see them on a real, plus-size, body.

Okay, I'm going to stop hogging the comments now :)

    2. That's a common myth about prints, Jill. Some prints can make your look larger and some can actually make you look smaller. It all depends on the print.

Personally, I think a brightly colored or multi-colored print looks better on a smaller scale, while a muted/neutral colored print can work on a larger scale.

To put it plainly, you could do wide stripes in black and gray or brown and tan or something and smaller, pinstripes in a bold color like pink or purple.

Make sense? With florals, I generally prefer smaller prints. It also can depend on how the print looks on your body. If you've got big minnie mouse polka dots over the LARGEST part of you, it may not work, you know?

  3. Oh, and how could I forget my Old Navy graphic tee? It has Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany's on it (I actually have 2 identical tees - I got them BOGO). It is at least the third Audrey tee I've owned in the past 4 years! LOVE her :)

  4. Just one more comment :)

I just got my new swimsuit in the mail and I love it! I'm shocked that I'm typing those words. It's a tankini with black bottoms and a striped top in two tones of pink, black, white, and yellow (see how that fits in with the topic?). It fits perfectly too. I am very busty so I wear a bra under my swimsuit for support (swimsuits with built in support for my size are $200 and up - not happening). This suit covers my bra straps, and everything else I want covered, without looking matronly. Happy, happy, joy, joy!

  6. For a person who is plus size, I LOVE prints! I got an awesome swimsuit from Walmart a couple of years ago with huge flowers all over it. I think the trick to wearing prints is getting the colors right so everything all goes together. The swimsuit colors were blue and brown, so it looked good and I always get compliments when I wear it. Beside the swimsuit, I have a couple of dresses and skirts with bold prints. Kind of makes your wardrobe more fun :).

Btw- from April to April, love reading your blog :). Our month is coming up next and I'm sure you're gearing up for all the lame "April jokes" and questions, lol.

    1. Rock on with your bad self and prints! I love it! ;) And, yes, sadly, "April jokes" are part of life. HAHA. And to make matters worse, I wasn't born in April so that question inevitably comes too...

    2. I don't get why people joke about other people's names?!? It's rude! I'm sorry you guys have to put up with that.
